Artificial intelligence is changing how consumers discover and compare financial products. Instead of moving between search engines, comparison websites, bank pages and customer reviews, people can increasingly ask an AI platform for a complete recommendation in a single conversation.
Research from Fintel Connect’s 2026 AI Search Guide for Financial Marketers indicates that consumer intent affects whether AI systems retrieve current online information. At the same time, a bank’s website content and third-party coverage influence which institutions appear in AI-generated answers and which brands receive top recommendations.
Affiliate publishers and comparison websites are especially influential because they often shape product evaluations before consumers visit a bank’s website.
Key Takeaways for Bank Marketers
- Focus on high-intent searches: Decision-stage prompts led to source retrieval in 90.3% of answers, giving current content a stronger opportunity to influence recommendations.
- Improve owned content: Banks with websites retrieved by AI systems were recommended first 24.5% of the time, compared with 15.3% for banks whose pages were not retrieved.
- Use affiliate partnerships strategically: Comparison pages and ranked lists can influence AI recommendations before a consumer clicks through to a financial institution.
- Optimize by AI platform: ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini use different source mixes, so one universal visibility strategy may not work across every platform.
- Measure visibility, not just traffic: Banks should track brand mentions, recommendation position, cited sources and competitor visibility inside AI-generated answers.
Why AI Search Is Reshaping Financial Product Discovery
Fintel Connect analyzed 800 non-branded consumer prompts across ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. The study produced 2,400 answers and 7,809 citations, highlighting why traditional website traffic metrics may not capture the full customer journey.
In the past, consumers typically visited multiple destinations before choosing a financial product. They might search for rates, compare features, review eligibility requirements, visit bank websites and read expert opinions. AI platforms can now combine information from several sources and present it in one response, potentially reducing the number of brands a consumer considers.
AI visibility involves more than being mentioned. A system may read a bank’s webpage without naming the institution in its answer. A bank may also be mentioned without receiving a recommendation. Even when several institutions are included, their positions and the amount of explanation they receive can vary significantly.
The research found that the first-listed brand received an average of 90.4 words of description. The second-listed brand received 75.3 words, while the third received 68.2 words. This suggests that ranking position can affect how much attention and context a bank receives.
For bank marketers, the objective is therefore twofold: secure inclusion in AI answers and improve the likelihood of being presented as a leading option during the consideration and decision stages.
Prioritize Content That AI Systems Retrieve
The wording of a consumer’s prompt strongly affects whether an AI platform consults current web sources. In the Fintel Connect study, awareness-stage prompts generated citations only 8.8% of the time. Citation frequency increased to 58.3% for consideration-stage prompts and reached 90.3% for decision-stage prompts.
Questions about the best products, current promotions, available rates and options offered today were more likely to trigger live source retrieval than broad educational questions.
This creates a clear opportunity for financial institutions. New or updated content has a better chance of influencing AI-generated recommendations when a platform retrieves current evidence instead of relying solely on information learned during model training.
Banks should create a tracked list of prompts related to:
- Product comparisons
- Interest rates and annual percentage yields
- Fees and account terms
- Eligibility requirements
- Application decisions
- Current promotions and offers
Marketing teams can then review whether existing pages answer these questions directly and accurately.
Strengthen Product and Eligibility Pages
Product pages are particularly important for AI search visibility. The research found that product pages represented 57.9% of brand-owned citations overall. In the high-yield savings category, product and rate pages accounted for 66.7% of brand-owned citations.
To make these pages easier for AI systems to interpret, banks should present important information in clear, readable text. Pages should explain rates, fees, qualification requirements, account features and the types of customers most likely to benefit from each product.
Financial institutions should also display update dates so the freshness of the information is clear. Essential details should not be hidden inside PDFs, images or complex interactive tools that may be difficult for retrieval systems to access or understand.
Make Affiliate Coverage Part of the Marketing Strategy
A bank’s website is only one source AI platforms use when developing financial product recommendations. Affiliate publishers, comparison websites and editorial review platforms can also determine which brands appear in an answer.
Across the study, 72% of answers that recommended a brand included at least one affiliate-page citation. Affiliate or publisher content represented at least one-fifth of cited answers across the AI models and accounted for nearly 65% of Claude’s answers.
The influence was concentrated among several major publishers. NerdWallet, Bankrate, Forbes Advisor, WalletHub and Experian’s editorial site represented 51.9% of all affiliate citations. However, the most influential publishers differed by product category.
A partner strategy designed for credit cards may not deliver the same results for savings accounts, mortgages or personal loans. Banks should identify which comparison pages AI platforms retrieve for priority products, determine where the institution is missing and assess which publishers could close those coverage gaps.
Affiliate partners should be evaluated on more than referral volume and conversion rates. Their ability to influence product discovery and consideration within AI-generated answers is becoming an important performance factor.
Coordinate Owned Content and Third-Party Coverage
Owned media and affiliate coverage can strengthen one another. Banks whose own pages were retrieved by AI systems were recommended first 24.5% of the time, compared with 15.3% when their websites were not retrieved.
The study also found a higher first-recommendation rate when affiliate content appeared in an answer. This supports a coordinated approach that combines authoritative product information on the bank’s website with accurate, relevant coverage on third-party pages already used by AI platforms.
For financial institutions, the goal is not to choose between owned content and affiliate marketing. Both channels can contribute to visibility when they provide consistent, current and useful evidence about products and services.
Develop an AI Visibility Measurement Plan
The research identified significant differences among major AI platforms. Financial institution-owned pages represented 70.2% of ChatGPT citations, while affiliate pages accounted for 64.9% of Claude citations. Gemini used a more balanced combination of bank websites, affiliate sources, community discussions and video content.
These differences make it important to monitor AI visibility by platform and product category rather than relying on one overall score.
Useful metrics include:
- How often the bank is mentioned in responses to priority prompts
- Whether the institution is recommended first
- Which webpages and publishers are cited
- How competitors are positioned
- How much explanation the bank receives
- Whether the answer reflects current rates, fees and product terms
Community discussions and video content may also influence visibility, particularly on Gemini. For prompts containing the word “best,” Gemini cited Reddit in 29.7% of answers and video sources in 54.5% of responses.
Banks that participate in these channels should emphasize credible, useful information rather than simply repeating promotional messages. Authentic educational content is more likely to support consumer trust and long-term visibility.
The Future of AI Search in Banking
AI search is still developing, and the Fintel Connect study represents a defined group of prompts, platforms and product categories rather than the entire financial services market.
Even so, the findings point to several practical priorities for bank marketers. Financial institutions should make product information easy to retrieve, improve the quality and freshness of decision-stage content, strengthen relevant third-party coverage and measure how often they earn a prominent position in AI-generated answers.
As AI becomes a larger part of financial product research, website traffic alone will not provide a complete picture of marketing performance. Banks must also understand whether they are visible, accurately represented and recommended when consumers use AI to make important financial decisions.
