Washington, D.C. – Senator Elizabeth Warren has fiercely criticized the Trump administration’s decision to communicate Social Security updates exclusively via X, formerly known as Twitter.
Warren took to X to voice her concerns, stating, “Right, because Grandma is on X. This is corruption, plain and simple.” Her outrage stems from a Wired report detailing the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) plans to discontinue traditional press releases and “dear colleague” letters, opting instead for X as its primary communication channel.
The shift coincides with significant staffing reductions at the SSA. According to reports, regional office staff could be slashed by nearly 90%, with 7,000 jobs already eliminated since February. The agency, which once employed 547 individuals across regional offices, is projected to retain only around 70 after the cuts.
White House spokesperson Liz Huston defended the move, claiming it aims to improve service delivery by reassigning staff to frontline assistance. “There has not been a reduction in workforce… President Trump will continue to always protect Social Security,” Huston stated.
However, concerns linger regarding the potential impact on fraud prevention. One SSA employee questioned whether losing subject matter experts would lead to increased fraud, waste, and abuse. Regional Commissioner Linda Kerr-Davis reportedly acknowledged the risk, stating, “Things are going to break, and they’re going to break fast.”
This controversy follows previous scrutiny of the Trump administration’s relationship with Elon Musk, the owner of X. Critics argue that relying solely on a social media platform, particularly one owned by Musk, could disenfranchise seniors and others without consistent internet access.
The situation remains fluid, but Senator Warren and other Democratic lawmakers are expected to continue pressing the Trump administration for greater transparency and accountability regarding changes to Social Security communication and staffing.
