Volkswagen has surged ahead of Tesla to become the leading electric vehicle (EV) seller in Europe during the first quarter of 2025. New data reveals a significant shift in the European EV market.

According to figures released by JATO Dynamics, Volkswagen registered 65,679 new EVs, surpassing Tesla’s 53,237 registrations. This represents a remarkable 157% year-over-year increase for VW, while Tesla experienced a 38% decline in registrations compared to Q1 2024.

The overall European EV market is booming. Battery electric vehicles accounted for nearly 17% of all new car registrations in March, marking substantial growth compared to the previous year. The United Kingdom played a key role, with a 13% surge in EV adoption.

Despite losing the overall lead, Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 remain the top two best-selling individual EV models in Europe. However, the Volkswagen ID.4 is closing the gap, ranking third overall.

“Tesla’s Model Y transition is ongoing, but the Model 3 is still helping offset its loses, with the brand continuing to deal with PR issues” notes Felipe Munoz, a global analyst at JATO Dynamics.

These developments coincide with Tesla’s recent Q1 earnings report, which showed a decline in revenue and a significant drop in net income. However, Tesla stock experienced a boost after Elon Musk announced plans to dedicate more attention to his car company.

The European EV market is dynamic, and VW’s recent success highlights the increasing competition in the electric vehicle sector.
