Salt Lake City, UT – Utah Governor Spencer Cox on Thursday implored residents to disengage from social media, citing a “tremendous amount of disinformation” surrounding the recent assassination of Charlie Kirk. The governor highlighted the pervasive influence of foreign adversaries, including bots from Russia and China, actively attempting to sow discord and incite violence during this sensitive time.

During a press conference addressing the ongoing investigation into Kirk’s murder, Governor Cox emphasized the importance of community and family over digital consumption. “I think Charlie said it best that when things get bad, we should put our phones down and spend a little time with our families,” Cox stated. He further explained, “Our adversaries want violence. We have bots from Russia, China, all over the world that are trying to instill disinformation and encourage violence.”

The Governor urged the public to “ignore those, to turn off those streams,” and to prioritize personal connection and healing. “We desperately need some healing,” he added, promising further updates in the coming days and weeks. Cox reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to justice: “More than anything, we are going to catch this person.”

The individual responsible for the assassination of Charlie Kirk, which occurred Wednesday at Utah Valley University, remains at large. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is actively seeking public assistance, encouraging witnesses to submit any videos or tips that could aid the investigation.

In a significant development, the Utah Department of Public Safety released photographs earlier on Thursday of a “person of interest.” The individual is described as wearing a cap, sunglasses, and a distinctive t-shirt associated with donors to the Disabled Veterans National Foundation. Authorities continue to follow all leads in their intensive search for the perpetrator.
