The embrace of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots is reaching even the highest echelons of America’s military command. A U.S. Army Major General recently disclosed a surprisingly close working relationship with an AI chatbot, affectionately dubbed “Chat,” trusting it for significant strategic input.

Maj. Gen. William “Hank” Taylor, speaking at the annual Association of the United States Army conference, revealed his profound reliance on generative AI. “Chat and I are really close lately,” Taylor remarked, highlighting the growing integration of AI into military operations. His rationale is clear: “As a commander, I want to make better decisions. I want to make sure that I make decisions at the right time to give me the advantage.”

While specific instances of AI-assisted “key command decisions” were not detailed, Major General Taylor emphasized the chatbot’s utility in streamlining administrative tasks, such as drafting weekly reports. He also confirmed that the field army under his command in South Korea consistently employs relevant AI programs for predictive analysis, enhancing foresight and planning.

Taylor elaborated on AI’s diverse applications across various modernization domains within the Korean theater. “As we talk about protection, drone use, counter-drones and counter-UAS, medical modernization, aviation modernization, we have something going on in almost every domain of modernization in Korea, right? AI is one thing that, as a commander, it’s been very, very interesting for me,” he stated, reflecting on his long career that predates the computer era.

Beyond operational directives, Maj. Gen. Taylor has also turned to AI to refine his leadership methodology. He noted its assistance in developing models to improve individual decision-making among his soldiers. This extends to personal choices that “affect not only me, but my organization and overall readiness,” underscoring AI’s potential as a comprehensive tool for both strategic command and personnel development within the military.
