A disturbing trend is sweeping across US schools, fueled by the viral power of TikTok. Students are intentionally damaging their school-issued Chromebooks, attempting to short-circuit the devices for online attention.
The Chromebook Challenge: A Recipe for Disaster
The so-called “Chromebook Challenge” involves students inserting foreign objects into the Chromebook’s ports, causing the devices to smoke or even catch fire. School districts in Colorado, New Jersey, North Carolina, and Washington have issued warnings to parents about this dangerous trend.
How it Works
According to reports and online videos, students are using everyday items like writing utensils, paper clips, and even gum wrappers to short-circuit the Chromebooks. This reckless behavior has led to:
- School evacuations
- Early dismissals
- Emergency response calls
Serious Consequences
Schools are emphasizing that damaging school property can lead to disciplinary action and even legal charges. In one incident in Plainville, Connecticut, a middle schooler allegedly used scissors to damage a laptop, resulting in smoke inhalation for another student. The student now faces potential criminal charges in juvenile court.
“Although the investigation is ongoing, the student involved will be referred to juvenile court to face criminal charges,” said Superintendent Brian Reas.
TikTok Responds (Sort Of)
TikTok has reportedly banned the search term “Chromebook Challenge,” displaying a message warning users about dangerous online challenges and directing them to safety resources. However, the challenge persists on other social media platforms.
“Your safety matters. Some online challenges can be dangerous, disturbing, or even fabricated. Learn how to recognize harmful challenges so you can protect your health and well-being.” Reads the message displayed after searching for the term.
Echoes of Past Viral Dangers
This isn’t the first time TikTok has been linked to dangerous viral trends. The platform previously amplified the “Kia Challenge,” leading to a surge in car thefts and a multi-million dollar lawsuit. Other concerning trends include the “Blackout Challenge” and the “Fire Challenge,” highlighting the potential risks associated with online challenges.
A Public Health Concern
Experts are increasingly concerned about the impact of these challenges on young people. Psychiatrists have highlighted the complexities of understanding why children participate in risky online trends, labeling them an “emerging public health concern.”
Parents, educators, and social media platforms must work together to address these challenges and protect children from harm.
