Tesla is recalling over 46,000 Cybertrucks in the US due to a potential issue with exterior panel detachment. This recall impacts vehicles manufactured between November 2023 and February 27, 2025.
According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the stainless-steel exterior trim panel may detach during driving, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of accidents. Tesla will replace the rail panel assembly with a redesigned version that meets enhanced durability standards.
The problem was first brought to Tesla’s attention on February 21 by the NHTSA, following a report from a Cybertruck owner. Tesla acknowledges 151 warranty claims potentially linked to this issue but reports no collisions or injuries related to the defect.
While Tesla doesn’t publicly disclose Cybertruck-specific delivery numbers, analysts suggest that the recalled vehicles represent a significant portion of the Cybertrucks currently in circulation.
This recall comes amid a challenging period for Tesla (TSLA), with stock values declining this year. Factors contributing to this downturn include increased competition in the electric vehicle market. Shares of Tesla fell 1.4% in premarket trading following the recall announcement.
Tesla has faced scrutiny and a change in consumer sentiment, marked by protests at Tesla stores and sales boycotts. In 2024, Tesla led US vehicle recalls with 5.1 million units, though many issues were resolved via over-the-air software updates.
