Toyota’s RAV4 has surged ahead of the Tesla Model Y to become the world’s best-selling car in 2024, according to the latest figures. The race was tight, with the RAV4 edging out the Model Y by a narrow margin.
Automotive analyst Felipe Munoz from JATO Dynamics reports that Toyota sold 1,187,000 RAV4 units globally, marking an impressive 11% increase compared to the previous year. In contrast, the Tesla Model Y recorded 1,185,000 sales, a 3% decrease.
This represents a significant shift from the previous year, where the Model Y led with 1,223,000 sales, and the RAV4 trailed with 1,075,000. The Toyota RAV4’s resurgence is particularly noteworthy considering that the current generation is nearing its end, with a new model slated for release in 2026.
While Tesla faced production adjustments related to the updated Model Y, impacting sales in 2024 and early 2025, the RAV4’s strong performance underscores its enduring appeal and global demand.
Tesla experienced its first global sales decline in 2024, with Australian deliveries dropping by 16.8%. However, the brand showed signs of recovery, achieving its highest sales in Australia in nearly a year in May.
Following the top two contenders, the Toyota Corolla Cross secured third place with 859,000 sales, reflecting an 18% increase. The Honda CR-V closely followed with 854,000 sales. Other notable performers include the Toyota Corolla sedan, Toyota HiLux, and Ford F-150.
Chinese manufacturer BYD also made strides, with its Qin sedan climbing to eighth place, surpassing the Tesla Model 3. These figures encompass data from 153 markets, representing 99% of global new car sales.
