5810

Microsoft is phasing out OneNote for Windows 10, marking the end of an era as Windows 10 approaches its end-of-support date. The tech giant is urging users to transition to the OneNote desktop app, a part of Microsoft 365, to ensure continued access to features and security updates.

The Transition Plan

According to a Microsoft 365 Message Center announcement, official support for OneNote for Windows 10 will cease on October 14, 2025. After this date, the app will no longer receive updates, including crucial security patches.

To facilitate the migration, Microsoft will implement a phased approach:

  • June 2025: Sync performance of OneNote for Windows 10 will be deliberately slowed down.
  • July 2025: In-app banners will appear, notifying users about the impending end of support.

Why the Change?

Microsoft aims to provide a unified and modern OneNote experience through the desktop app. OneNote on Windows (part of Microsoft 365) offers several advantages, including:

  • Microsoft Information Protection sensitivity labeling
  • New features and Copilot integration
  • Regular security updates and bug fixes
  • Continuous support

Microsoft has published detailed migration guidance to assist users and IT administrators in smoothly transitioning from OneNote for Windows 10 to the OneNote desktop application.

Migrating to the OneNote desktop app is strongly recommended to maintain access to the latest features, security enhancements, and overall improved user experience.
