Microsoft Enhances User Control in Europe: Edge, Store, and Bing Adjustments

8203

Microsoft is rolling out significant changes to Windows 10, Windows 11, and its apps within the European Economic Area (EEA) to comply with the Digital Markets Act. These updates give users greater control over their default apps and search experiences.

Enhanced Default Browser Settings

Users in the EEA will experience expanded control over default browser settings. The “Set default” button will now configure a broader range of file and link types, including:

  • Link types: ftp, http, https, read
  • File types: .htm, .html, .mht, .mhtml, .shtml, .svg, .xht, .xhtml, .xml

Furthermore, setting a default browser will automatically pin it to the Taskbar (users can opt-out). The ability to set the default for .pdf files is also being introduced.

Streamlined Windows Search

The Windows Search experience is evolving to accommodate multiple web search providers. Key improvements include:

  • Automatic enablement of web search providers upon app installation.
  • Simultaneous display of results from various providers.
  • Customizable ordering of search providers in Settings.

Developers can find updated documentation here.

Uninstall Microsoft Store

EEA users will soon have the option to uninstall the Microsoft Store. Importantly, apps installed via the Store will continue to receive updates, ensuring security and functionality.

Reinstallation of the Microsoft Store will be possible. Developers can still distribute apps via the Microsoft Store Web Installer.

Microsoft App Adjustments

Several Microsoft apps are receiving updates:

  • The Microsoft Bing app will open web content in the default browser.
  • The Start Experiences app will also use the default browser for web content.
  • Microsoft Edge will only prompt users to set it as the default browser if directly opened.
  • Uninstalling Microsoft Edge will prevent other Microsoft apps from prompting reinstallation (excluding PWAs distributed through the Microsoft Store).

These changes aim to provide European users with greater choice and flexibility within the Windows ecosystem. Updates are rolling out through Windows Insider builds and will continue into retail releases.
