In a groundbreaking move for the U.S. energy sector, the Palisades Nuclear Plant in Michigan is poised to become the first idle American nuclear facility to be revived. This initiative aligns with President Trump’s strategy to bolster domestic energy resources.

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated, “To meet the rising demand for reliable and affordable energy, America must harness all available energy sources to fuel our economy, generate jobs, and ensure energy independence. The Department of Energy is committed to projects like the Palisades Nuclear Plant, paving the way for a nuclear renaissance in America.” While the DOE remained reserved on further details, the implications of this restart are significant.

Holtec International, now in charge of the plant located in Covert Township, Van Buren County, has received a $46 million installment, part of a potential $1.52 billion loan from the Department of Energy to facilitate the plant’s revival.

A company spokesperson shared, “We are eager to restore 800 megawatts of clean, baseload power to Michigan. The historic restart of Palisades will also bring back 600 skilled jobs to the region. We are targeting October 2025 for the restart and are working diligently to ensure the plant is ready for decades of future operation.”

The Palisades Nuclear Plant, after 50 years of operation, was initially decommissioned in May 2022 by its former owner, Entergy. This restart marks a turning point for the U.S. nuclear industry.

The plant’s reopening is contingent upon approval from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). Currently, the U.S. boasts approximately 94 nuclear reactors, generating about 97 gigawatts, making it the world’s largest commercial nuclear power fleet, according to the Department of Energy.

The Vogtle plant in Georgia remains the largest nuclear power facility in the United States.
