Meta Memoir: Shocking Facebook Secrets Exposed

A new tell-all memoir, “Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism,” by former Facebook employee Sarah Wynn-Williams, is shaking up Silicon Valley. Meta is reportedly attempting to suppress the book, but its shocking details are now public.

Inside Zuckerberg’s World: Demands and Quirks

Wynn-Williams paints a picture of Mark Zuckerberg that includes some eyebrow-raising requests. One anecdote details how Zuckerberg allegedly wanted either a “peace rally” or a “riot” organized during a trip to Asia to gauge Facebook’s power in mobilizing people offline.

The book further claims Zuckerberg refused to attend meetings before noon, even with heads of state, and that Meta went to extreme lengths to protect him from the Zika virus during a visit to Peru, even constructing a “controlled structure” for him.

China Dreams and Diplomatic Hurdles

The memoir highlights Zuckerberg’s persistent attempts to gain access to the Chinese market and meet with President Xi Jinping. One account describes a rushed handshake with Xi in Seattle and a failed attempt to orchestrate a “spontaneous encounter” at APEC in Peru.

Sandberg’s Initiatives and Controversies

Sheryl Sandberg’s vision for Facebook extended beyond social networking, according to Wynn-Williams. One initiative involved promoting organ donation, but logistical challenges reportedly led to frustration. The book also casts doubt on Sandberg’s account of a near-miss plane crash, suggesting her version of events was embellished.

Algorithm “Gaming” and Engagement Secrets

Wynn-Williams raises questions about the authenticity of engagement on Zuckerberg and Sandberg’s Facebook posts, hinting at potential manipulation of the platform’s algorithm. An assistant allegedly managed engagement for their social media “using all of Facebook’s tools,” and when asked about algorithm “gaming,” the response was evasive.

Kaplan’s Controversies: Geography, Myanmar, and Harassment Allegations

Joel Kaplan, Meta’s Chief Global Affairs Officer, also faces scrutiny in the memoir. Wynn-Williams recounts Kaplan being unaware that Taiwan is an island and needing explanations of countries’ locations. She also accuses Kaplan of slow-rolling Facebook’s response to the crisis in Myanmar and of harassment, leading to an investigation and her subsequent termination.

Meta’s Response: “False Accusations”

Meta has vehemently denied the allegations in “Careless People,” calling it a “mix of out-of-date and previously reported claims” and “false accusations.” The company claims Wynn-Williams was fired for poor performance and toxic behavior and that an investigation found her harassment allegations to be “misleading and unfounded.”
