Johnson: Men Should Work, Not Game All Day

House Speaker Mike Johnson is under scrutiny after remarks suggesting some young men are choosing video games over employment, impacting Medicaid resources.

Johnson defended proposed Medicaid work requirements, arguing it restores “the dignity of work to young men who need to be at work instead of playing video games all day.” He claims this shift would free up resources for those genuinely in need, such as single mothers, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

Republicans are aiming to cut federal spending by trillions to fund President Trump’s tax cuts, including potential $880 billion Medicaid reductions. Critics warn these cuts could jeopardize healthcare for millions of low-income Americans.

Despite Johnson’s claims of no direct benefit cuts, critics contend work requirements could strip coverage from millions, including the temporarily unemployed. A Center on Budget and Policy Priorities report suggests up to 36 million of the 72 million Medicaid enrollees could lose coverage under such requirements.

With pressure from Trump, Johnson and House Republicans face the challenge of justifying these significant cuts to voters potentially losing access to vital services.
