Apple’s loyal iPhone customer base is expressing displeasure over a recent advertisement within the Apple Wallet app promoting the upcoming “F1” movie. The notification, offering a $10 discount on Fandango for those purchasing two or more tickets, has sparked debate among users who feel their digital wallet is an inappropriate space for marketing.
The “F1” film, starring Brad Pitt, delves into the high-octane world of Formula 1 racing. Notably, the movie showcases Apple’s technology, including custom-built cameras using iPhone components for in-car filming and AirPods Max used by Pitt’s character, F1 driver Sonny Hayes.
While the film itself may be anticipated, many iPhone users are pushing back against what they perceive as intrusive advertising within a core utility app.
One Reddit user, u/captain42d, lamented, “I did not pay over $1000 for an iPhone to get advertised at.” Another post questioned how to disable Apple Pay ads, quickly gathering numerous responses from like-minded individuals.
Interestingly, the iOS 26 beta includes a new setting to disable “Offers & Promotions” within the Apple Wallet. However, this option is unavailable in the current public release. Users are presently limited to disabling notifications or card benefits during checkout, lacking a complete opt-out for promotional content.
The inclusion of this control in iOS 26 suggests Apple intends to increase marketing efforts via the Wallet app. This potential shift has many iPhone owners concerned.
Past instances of Apple pushing ads, such as those in iOS Settings or the infamous U2 album automatically added to iTunes libraries, have faced similar backlash. Users are generally resistant to unsolicited marketing on their devices.
Referencing the U2 incident, a Reddit user commented on the “F1” Wallet notification, saying, “I am getting Bono flashbacks.”
Apple and its distribution partner, Warner Bros., have been heavily promoting “F1,” including a haptic trailer launch with vibration feedback. The film was also previewed at the recent WWDC 2025 keynote, featuring appearances from Apple CEO Tim Cook and SVP of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi.
Apple has not yet responded to requests for comment on this matter.
