Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is reportedly drafting impeachment articles targeting Trump administration officials embroiled in the “Signalgate” scandal. This controversy stems from discussions about military plans concerning Yemen conducted via the Signal messaging app.
The leaked Signal group chat, which included a journalist inadvertently, revealed conversations about ordering and celebrating bombings in Yemen. Critics argue these actions constitute war crimes.
Sources indicate Omar is focusing on Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and CIA Director John Ratcliffe. These officials allegedly participated in the chat, raising concerns about the security and legality of their communications.
In a statement on Bluesky, Omar criticized Hegseth, stating his actions and incompetence render him “grossly unfit” for his role.
The potential articles of impeachment may address violations of the Federal Records Act and Administrative Procedure Act, given Signal’s lack of long-term record-keeping. Furthermore, the articles could challenge the legality of U.S. airstrikes in Yemen under international law.
While passage of the impeachment articles remains unlikely, Omar’s move could force a public vote, compelling Republicans to take a stance on the matter.
Pressure is reportedly mounting on President Trump to dismiss at least one official involved, with some suggesting Waltz, who mistakenly added the journalist to the chat, should be held accountable.
Public opinion appears largely critical of the administration’s actions. A recent YouGov poll indicates that 74% of Americans view the “Signalgate” situation as a serious issue.
