In a move stirring significant controversy within the gaming industry, Rockstar Games, the developer behind the highly anticipated GTA 6, has reportedly terminated the employment of over 30 staff members across its UK and Canadian offices. While parent company Take-Two Interactive attributes these dismissals to “gross misconduct,” the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) staunchly accuses Rockstar of “union busting.”
Reports from Bloomberg indicate that all affected individuals were either active union members or involved in efforts to organize a union within Rockstar, connected through a private Discord group dedicated to labor discussions. The IWGB swiftly condemned the actions on Twitter, labeling them as “the most ruthless act of union busting in the history of the UK games industry.”
The union further asserted, “Yesterday, @RockstarGames fired over 30 employees for union activity. We won’t back down, and we’re not scared – we will fight for every member to be reinstated.” This bold statement underscores the union’s commitment to challenging the firings.
Alex Marshall, President of the IWGB, articulated the union’s outrage in a statement to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, describing Rockstar’s actions as a “flagrant contempt for the law and for the lives of the workers who bring in their billions,” further calling it “an insult to their fans and the global industry.”
When approached for comment, Rockstar Games directed inquiries to Take-Two Interactive spokesperson Alan Lewis. Lewis issued a statement defending the company’s position: “We strive to make the world’s best entertainment properties by giving our best-in-class creative teams positive work environments and ongoing career opportunities. Our culture is focused on teamwork, excellence, and kindness. Rockstar Games terminated a small number of individuals for gross misconduct, and for no other reason. As always, we fully support Rockstar’s ambitions and approach.”
