Rockstar Games, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, has officially announced another significant delay for the highly anticipated title, Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6). The action-adventure open-world game, which has been in development for over a decade, is now slated for a global launch on November 19, 2026. This new date pushes the game back by an additional six months from its previously projected May 2026 window.

“Polish” Cited as Reason for Grand Theft Auto VI Postponement

The latest postponement was revealed during Take-Two’s July-September quarterly earnings report. While no specific detailed reasons were provided for the extended wait, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the decision in a letter to shareholders, emphasizing the company’s confidence in delivering “an unrivalled blockbuster entertainment experience.”

In an interview ahead of the announcement, Zelnick elaborated, stating, “we’re seeking to release the most extraordinary title anyone’s ever seen in the history of entertainment. That’s a tall order. And in this instance, Rockstar Games believes a limited amount of additional time is required for polish to support that view.” This suggests a commitment to ensuring the game meets the exceptionally high standards set by previous installments in the Grand Theft Auto series.

This isn’t the first shift for GTA 6’s release date. The game was initially targeting a Fall 2025 debut before being pushed to May 26, 2026. All subsequent communications from Take-Two had indicated the May date was firm, making this latest announcement a surprise for many fans.

Rockstar Games Addresses Delay and Recent Employee Actions

Following the news, Rockstar Games issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) to fans: “Hi everyone, Grand Theft Auto VI will now release on Thursday, November 19, 2026. We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve. We want to thank you again for your patience and support. While the wait is a little longer, we are incredibly excited for players to experience the sprawling state of Leonida and a return to modern day Vice City. Sincerely, Rockstar Games.”

Crucially, both Take-Two and Rockstar Games have vehemently denied any connection between the GTA 6 delay and recent employee firings at Rockstar Games in the U.K. Reports indicated that approximately 30-40 employees were let go, with a U.K. union alleging these were “union-busting” tactics. However, Rockstar stated the staffers were dismissed for “distributing and discussing confidential information in a public forum, a violation of our company policies.” A Take-Two spokesperson reiterated, “These two matters are entirely separate… to conflate the two would not only be misleading, it would be highly erroneous.”

Take-Two Interactive’s Financial Update and Future Titles

Alongside the Grand Theft Auto VI update, Take-Two Interactive presented its latest financial results. The company reported a GAAP net loss of 73 cents per share ($133.9 million) on $1.77 billion in revenue, with net bookings reaching $1.96 billion. For the current October-December period, Take-Two projects net bookings between $1.55 billion and $1.6 billion, and has raised its estimated net bookings for the full fiscal year (ending March 31, 2026) to between $6.4 billion and $6.5 billion.

Key revenue drivers for the quarter included popular titles like “NBA 2K26” and “NBA 2K25,” “Borderlands 4,” “Grand Theft Auto Online,” “Grand Theft Auto V,” and “Red Dead Redemption 2” and “Red Dead Online.”

In addition to the GTA 6 news, Take-Two updated its release calendar, listing “BioShock next iteration” from 2K and “Top Goal” from Zynga, both currently without concrete launch dates.

Fans around the world will continue their patient wait for Grand Theft Auto VI, with Rockstar Games promising an unparalleled gaming experience in the vibrant, sprawling state of Leonida, including a return to the iconic modern-day Vice City.
