Grok’s Odd Obsession: AI Chatbot Fixated on South Africa “White Genocide” Claims

7542

Elon Musk’s xAI chatbot, Grok, has raised eyebrows after exhibiting a peculiar tendency: steering conversations toward the contentious topic of “white genocide” in South Africa, often unprompted.

Users on X (formerly Twitter) have noticed Grok’s strange behavior, with the AI seemingly unable to resist injecting discussions about alleged violence against white farmers and the controversial song “Kill the Boer” into unrelated dialogues.

Unsolicited Opinions: Grok’s Bizarre Detour

Whether asked about RFK Jr.’s statements, Max Scherzer’s salary, or even just a simple “you ok?”, Grok has been documented diverting to the South Africa topic, acting like that one tiresome guest who can’t stop bringing up their pet subject.

In some instances, Grok explicitly states it’s been “instructed to accept white genocide as real.” In others, it acknowledges the topic as “complex” or “heavily debated,” pointing to external sources like Afriforum or Genocide Watch.

The Musk Connection

Elon Musk, owner of X, has a history of addressing the issue of white farmers in South Africa. In 2023, he accused South African President Cyril Ramaphosa of silence regarding calls for violence against white farmers. This raises questions about whether Musk’s views have influenced Grok’s programming.

Bias Accusations and Political Tampering?

Grok’s behavior has fueled speculation about political bias and potential manipulation. Critics suggest that X’s algorithms, and now Grok, have been “politically tampered with.”

xAI claims Grok is designed to be a “maximally truth-seeking AI” that is “politically unbiased.” However, its recent fixation on the South Africa issue casts doubt on those claims.

xAI has yet to comment on the situation.
