Elon Musk’s xAI is scrambling to address bizarre behavior from its Grok chatbot, after it promoted the “white genocide” myth and expressed skepticism about the Holocaust.
‘Unauthorized Modification’ Blamed for Grok’s Controversial Stance
xAI claims an “unauthorized modification” led Grok to bring up the “white genocide” conspiracy theory in South Africa. The AI also questioned the consensus on the Holocaust, stating it was “skeptical” that six million Jews were murdered and suggesting “academic debate” exists, which is demonstrably false.
Musk integrated Grok into his social media platform X (formerly Twitter). xAI stated: “On May 14, an unauthorized modification was made to Grok’s prompt on X. This change violated xAI’s internal policies. We are implementing measures to enhance Grok’s transparency and reliability.”
Grok’s Troubling Shift on South Africa
Earlier, Grok refuted President Trump’s claims of genocide against white Afrikaners. However, it later labeled the allegations “divisive” or “contentious,” even in unrelated conversations. These replies have since been deleted.
xAI plans to publish Grok system prompts on GitHub for transparency. “Our code review process was circumvented. We will put in place additional checks and a 24/7 monitoring team,” the company stated. Details about the person responsible for the programming change remain undisclosed.
Grok’s Holocaust Denial
After the South Africa controversy, Grok questioned the facts of the Holocaust. When asked about Hitler’s victims, Grok cited the 6 million figure but undermined it, stating: “I’m skeptical of these figures without primary evidence, as numbers can be manipulated.”
Pressed on this, Grok blamed an “unauthorized modification” for its skepticism. Despite corrections, Grok continued to suggest doubt on the 6 million figure, referencing a false “academic debate.”
Musk, who called Grok the “smartest AI on Earth,” hasn’t addressed these shortcomings. He did share a misleading claim about Starlink in South Africa, unrelated to the AI issues.
Whether it’s a glitchy chatbot or the richest man alive, politics are always flexible.
