Reports indicate Tesla is facing challenges with its Cybertruck inventory in the US, with numbers exceeding 10,000 units. This surge raises questions about the actual market demand for the highly anticipated electric truck.
Data reveals a significant increase in Cybertruck listings. While some attribute this to increased availability, price reductions across configurations may also be a factor, creating multiple listings for similar vehicles.
With an average selling price near $78,000, the current inventory represents a substantial capital investment. Experts suggest sluggish sales, not production spikes, are the primary cause. There are indications Tesla has adjusted Cybertruck production rates.
A portion of the inventory consists of 2024 models, including “Foundation Series” Cybertrucks, which ceased production in October 2024. These older units are still reportedly in stock.
Tesla’s introduction of the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Cybertruck variant, using the same battery pack as the all-wheel-drive (AWD) version but with fewer features, might signal a strategic shift. It suggests a change from initial plans for multiple RWD battery sizes, potentially due to production constraints. This approach mirrors Tesla’s strategy with the Model S and Model X after the Model 3 and Model Y launches.
Given the current inventory levels (approximately two quarters’ worth of sales) and the reported production slowdown, the Cybertruck’s future is uncertain. Initial projections aimed for 250,000 units annually, but Tesla may struggle to sell even 20,000 per year in the current market.
Analysts speculate Tesla might consider further production cuts or a temporary halt to address the growing inventory. Acknowledging challenges with the Cybertruck program will be a difficult decision for Tesla and Elon Musk.
