Copyright Office Director Fired Amid AI Debate

Washington D.C. – In a surprise move, the Trump administration has terminated Shira Perlmutter, the Director of the U.S. Copyright Office, sources confirmed to CBS News. The dismissal follows the release of a report by Perlmutter’s office addressing the complex intersection of artificial intelligence and copyright law.

The Copyright Office report raised questions about the extent to which AI developers should be allowed to utilize copyrighted material. “It is an open question, however, how much data an AI developer needs, and the marginal effect of more data on a model’s capabilities,” the report stated, hinting at potential limitations on unchecked data usage.

The White House has yet to issue an official statement regarding Perlmutter’s termination.

Perlmutter’s tenure began in October 2020, appointed by then-Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden, who was also previously removed from her position by President Trump.

Democratic Representative Joe Morelle, a leading member of the House Administration Committee, condemned the firing as “a brazen, unprecedented power grab with no legal basis.” He suggested a possible link between Perlmutter’s dismissal and her perceived resistance to Elon Musk’s AI endeavors. Morelle alleged the firing happened “less than a day after she refused to rubber-stamp Elon Musk’s efforts to mine troves of copyrighted works to train AI models.”

Musk, who owns the AI startup xAI and previously attempted to acquire OpenAI, has publicly questioned the necessity of intellectual property laws.

The Trump administration has demonstrated strong support for AI development, previously announcing a massive investment initiative involving OpenAI, Softbank, and Oracle.

The U.S. Copyright Office, a division of the Library of Congress, employs approximately 450 individuals and is responsible for copyright registration, record-keeping, and the administration of copyright law.
