YouTube’s algorithm has flagged Balatro videos as age-restricted content, citing potential gambling themes. This has sparked frustration from the game’s creator, LocalThunk, and the Balatro community.
The issue arose following YouTube’s updated TOS on March 19th, targeting depictions or promotions of online casinos. Channels dedicated to Balatro, like Balatro University, found their content caught in the crossfire, impacting their reach.
Age restrictions significantly limit video visibility, hindering algorithmic recommendations. Balatro‘s classification as gambling content is questionable, as it’s a deck-building game with casino aesthetics, not an online casino. This mirrors previous PEGI rating issues which were later resolved.
Balatro University highlights the inconsistent application of these restrictions and the difficulty in appealing them. LocalThunk expressed his annoyance on Bluesky, questioning the logic behind protecting children from card combinations while allowing CS:GO case opening videos.
The incident raises concerns about automated content moderation and its impact on creators and the open internet.
