AMD Surges in Japan’s GPU Market

AMD is experiencing a surge in popularity in Japan, reaching a record 45% GPU market share. This milestone was revealed at AMD’s Spring New Product Launch in Akihabara, Tokyo.

Challenging the Dominance

An AMD Japan executive noted the company “isn’t used to selling so many graphics cards,” during discussions about Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT shortages.

Aiming for 70% Market Share

Yoshiaki Sato, AMD Japan’s Marketing Manager, expressed the company’s ambition to reach 70% market share, humorously stating, “We’re the opposition party, so let’s aim for 70%! We have never been a ruling party!”

Supply Constraints and High Demand

Board partners like Asrock, Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, PowerColor, and Sapphire acknowledged production capacity limitations in meeting the overwhelming demand for RDNA 4 graphics cards.

The demand for high-end GPUs, including the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090, led to chaotic scenes at retailers in Japan.

“Unprecedented” Demand

Earlier this month, AMD’s David McAfee described the demand as “unprecedented,” emphasizing that restocking is a top priority. However, prices have been increasing.

Asus, for example, has raised prices on its RX 9070 series and RTX 5090 cards.

Future Availability

Yeston, an AMD board partner, anticipates supply stabilization for its RX 9070 cards after April, offering hope for improved global stock levels.
