A comprehensive study by MIT Technology Review reveals the surprisingly high energy demands of AI, particularly generative models like those powering ChatGPT and AI video creation. The findings highlight the growing environmental impact of our increasingly AI-driven world.

ChatGPT’s Energy Footprint: More Than Just a Bottle of Water

Forget the simplistic comparison of a ChatGPT search to a bottle of water. The report dives deep, quantifying the energy expenditure of large-language models. Generating a single response can range from 114 to 6,706 joules – that’s the equivalent of running a microwave for a fraction of a second to a full eight seconds. Less accurate models use fewer parameters, which translates to lower energy consumption, but at the cost of reliability.

The Shocking Energy Cost of AI Video

The real energy hog? AI-generated video. According to the report, creating a mere five-second video clip with a modern AI model consumes a staggering 3.4 million joules. This is over 700 times the energy needed to produce a high-quality image and equates to running a microwave for over an hour.

Researchers illustrated this point further by calculating the energy needed for a hypothetical user interacting with an AI chatbot: 15 questions, 10 images, and 3 five-second videos. The total? Approximately 2.9 kilowatt-hours, or the equivalent of running a microwave for more than 3.5 hours.

Data Centers: AI’s Power Hungry Hubs

The investigation also points to the rising energy consumption of data centers, the backbone of the AI industry. Efficiency gains had previously kept electricity usage relatively stable. However, the surge in energy-intensive AI technologies has caused U.S. data center energy consumption to double since 2017. Government data projects that AI tools will account for half of all data center electricity usage by 2028.
