Donald Trump’s inner circle is reportedly up in arms following a CNN report on ICEBlock, an app designed to track Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity. The app, created by Joshua Aaron, allows users to anonymously report sightings of ICE agents, creating what Aaron describes as an “early warning system” for communities.
Bondi Threatens Legal Action
Former Attorney General Pam Bondi, during a Fox News appearance, claimed the government is “looking into” Aaron and the app, suggesting potential legal repercussions. “He’s giving a message to criminals where our federal officers are, and he cannot do that,” Bondi stated. “We are looking at it, we are looking at him, and he better watch out.”
Bondi further asserted that the app could endanger law enforcement, a claim disputed by civil liberties advocates.
ICE Officials Condemn App
Acting ICE Director Todd Lyons echoed Bondi’s sentiments, stating that ICEBlock “basically paints a target on federal law enforcement officers’ backs.” Other Trump administration figures, including border czar Tom Homan and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, also voiced strong opposition. Noem suggested the app “sure looks like obstruction of justice.”
Homan urged the Department of Justice to investigate whether CNN had crossed a line by reporting on the app’s existence.
CNN Defends Reporting
CNN responded to the criticism by emphasizing the app’s public availability. “This is an app that is publicly available to any iPhone user who wants to download it,” a CNN spokesperson said. “There is nothing illegal about reporting the existence of this or any other app, nor does such reporting constitute promotion or other endorsement of the app by CNN.”
Civil Liberties Concerns
Critics of the Trump administration’s response argue that the outrage over ICEBlock is an attempt to suppress efforts to monitor government activity and protect vulnerable communities. They highlight that a significant portion of individuals targeted by ICE have no criminal convictions.
