Xbox Hardware’s Future: A Founder’s Dire Prediction

Laura Fryer, a founding member of the original Xbox team, has voiced concerns about the future of Xbox hardware, suggesting the brand might be exiting the hardware business entirely.

Founder’s Perspective on Xbox’s Direction

In a recent video, Fryer reflected on her experiences with the launch of the original Xbox and the Xbox 360. She expressed disappointment with the company’s current strategy. Her comments come after the announcement of the ROG Xbox Ally.

“I don’t love watching all of the value that I helped create slowly get eroded away,” Fryer stated. “From my perspective, it looks like Xbox has no desire – or literally can’t – ship hardware anymore. Personally, I think Xbox hardware is dead.”

Focus on Game Pass and Legacy Titles

Fryer believes Xbox is primarily focused on expanding its Game Pass service. She questions the long-term sustainability of this approach, even considering the potential success of outsourcing remasters of older titles.

“What is the long-term plan? Where are the new hits? What will make people care about the Xbox 25 years from now?” she asked, highlighting the need for innovation and fresh content to maintain relevance.

Uncertainty Ahead of 25th Anniversary

With the 25th anniversary of Xbox approaching, Fryer remains hopeful but uncertain. “Maybe next year is the year that the fog will clear, and all of us will see the beauty in these latest announcements. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…”

These comments follow reports of potential layoffs within Microsoft’s gaming division, impacting sales teams, which The Verge reported, comes before the release of its next generation of consoles.

Microsoft has partnered with AMD to power future Xbox consoles, but the launch date for these new devices remains unconfirmed.
