Windows 11 System Restore: Microsoft Confirms 60-Day Deletion Policy

Microsoft has officially confirmed that Windows 11 will automatically delete System Restore points after 60 days. This change means users need to proactively manage their system backups to ensure data protection.

What This Means for Windows 11 Users

System Restore is a crucial feature that allows users to revert their PC’s system files, settings, and registry to a previous state. This is particularly useful for troubleshooting issues caused by new software installations, driver updates, or system modifications. By reverting to a restore point, users can undo changes without affecting personal files.

However, these restore points are not permanent. Microsoft’s recent announcement clarifies that Windows 11, starting with version 24H2, will retain system restore points for a maximum of 60 days. After this period, the restore points are automatically deleted.

Windows 10 vs. Windows 11: A Key Difference

Previous documentation suggested that Windows 10 could retain restore points for up to 90 days. This change in Windows 11 means users have a shorter window to utilize older restore points, necessitating more frequent manual backups.

How to Protect Your System

To mitigate the risk of losing valuable restore points, it’s recommended to create system restore points regularly. Here’s how:

  1. Open Start and search for “Create a restore point.”
  2. In the System Protection tab, under Protection Settings, ensure protection is turned on for the desired partition.
  3. Select the partition and click “Configure” to enable protection if it’s not already on.
  4. Click “Create” and follow the on-screen instructions to create a new restore point.

Given the 60-day deletion policy, creating a restore point every few weeks is a good practice to maintain multiple recent snapshots of your system.

Microsoft’s Push for Windows 11

This change comes as Microsoft is actively encouraging users to upgrade from Windows 10 before support ends. Features like the AI-powered Recall, which captures screen activity, are exclusive to Windows 11 and aim to enhance user experience and productivity.
