AT&T Resists Pressure to Roll Back DEI Amidst Trump-Era Scrutiny

8167

Despite facing potential regulatory hurdles in acquiring Lumen’s residential fiber network for $5.75 billion, AT&T CEO John Stankey asserts the company will maintain its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives. This stance comes amid increased scrutiny from the Trump administration, which has launched investigations into companies deemed insufficiently “racist” – claiming DEI efforts discriminate against white individuals.

Stankey stated, “We don’t have to roll back anything. Our policies and our approach at AT&T have always been that we progress people on merit… our goal is to make sure that every employee… feels like they belong here.”

However, AT&T’s commitment is being questioned. The company previously reduced support for LGBTQ+ causes, including a suicide hotline for LGBTQ+ youth, and financially supports right-wing politicians despite promises to the contrary. Furthermore, AT&T has a history of “co-opting” civil rights groups to bolster support for controversial policies.

While some view Stankey’s comments as courageous, AT&T’s past actions raise doubts about the company’s true dedication to DEI. The Trump FCC’s legal challenges against DEI programs are considered weak, especially given the administration’s broader efforts to weaken corporate oversight.

Ultimately, AT&T’s actions will speak louder than its words as it navigates the complexities of regulatory approval and political pressure.

“That said, it’s not clear how much value AT&T’s words and promises have.” It depends, are negative values allowed?

‘We don’t need to do any of that, because we already have!’ Turns out that when AT&T said they didn’t need or intend to roll back anything to appease the regime it’s because they’ve already done all that work ahead of time.
