Following a tragic explosion near a Palm Springs fertility clinic, Reddit has banned the subreddit r/Efilism, a community centered around an anti-natalist philosophy. The ban comes after authorities linked the suspect in the bombing to anti-natalist beliefs.
The explosion, which occurred this past weekend, resulted in the suspect’s death and injuries to four others. Law enforcement officials indicated that the suspect, identified as Guy Edward Bartkus, 25, held strong “anti-natalist” views, which they believe motivated the attack.
In a statement to NBC News on Monday, a Reddit spokesperson confirmed the removal of r/Efilism, citing the platform’s policy against content that promotes self-harm. While r/Efilism is gone, other anti-natalist communities remain active on Reddit.
Reddit is actively working to remove and prevent the re-uploading of the suspect’s manifesto and related audio recordings that circulated online. “Violence has no place on Reddit,” the spokesperson stated, emphasizing the platform’s commitment to enforcing its rules against content that encourages or glorifies violence.
Efilism, derived from “life” spelled backward, falls within the broader anti-natalist movement, which posits that humans should cease procreation due to ethical concerns about continuing life on Earth. Some adherents advocate for more drastic measures to end human existence.
The now-banned r/Efilism subreddit boasted over 10,000 subscribers. Archived discussions reveal users contemplating ways to hasten the end of society.
Prior to the explosion, a website and associated audio recording, believed to be created by Bartkus, surfaced, outlining a “promortalist” viewpoint advocating for the end of humanity. The website also referenced Efilism and several Reddit communities related to anti-natalism.
Other anti-natalist communities on Reddit have issued statements distancing themselves from the suspect and the violent act. One moderator emphasized their philosophy of non-violence, asserting that reproductive decisions should be made individually.
