Duolingo CEO: AI Superior Teacher, But Schools Needed for Childcare

Luis von Ahn, CEO of Duolingo, envisions a future where AI takes the lead in education, citing its ability to personalize learning at scale. However, he acknowledges the enduring role of schools as essential providers of childcare.

In a recent interview on the No Priors podcast, von Ahn stated his belief that AI can effectively teach any subject. He emphasized AI’s capacity to offer individualized attention, a feat challenging for traditional classrooms with a single teacher managing numerous students.

Duolingo, known for its language-learning app, has been actively integrating AI into its operations. From temporarily replacing the CEO with an AI avatar during an earnings call to automating contract work, the company is demonstrating its commitment to AI-driven solutions.

With a vast user base providing extensive data, Duolingo has fine-tuned its approach to maximize learner engagement. The platform leverages insights from thousands of A/B tests to tailor content and timing, ensuring students remain motivated and progress effectively.

While von Ahn foresees AI dominating instruction, he doesn’t predict the disappearance of teachers or schools. Instead, he suggests schools will evolve into childcare centers complemented by AI-powered learning tools like Duolingo.

He noted that while subjects like history might benefit from video content, AI’s scalability makes it ideal for individualized instruction across various disciplines.

Some educational institutions are already embracing AI. Alpha School, for example, utilizes AI to deliver personalized learning experiences, with teachers acting as guides who provide emotional and motivational support.

Von Ahn anticipates a gradual transition, emphasizing that widespread changes in education will take time, similar to the slow-paced nature of governmental processes.
