Qatar’s Jet Gift to US Sparks Security Alarm: Experts Warn of “Counterintelligence Nightmare”

A proposed donation of a luxury jet from the Qatari government to the United States for use as Air Force One is raising serious red flags among security experts. The offer, defended by President Trump as a “very nice gesture,” is being scrutinized for potential security vulnerabilities.

Security Concerns Mount Over Qatari Jet Donation

Critics, including Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed, are voicing strong opposition. Reed argues that accepting the jet would “pose immense counterintelligence risks,” potentially granting a foreign nation access to sensitive US systems and communications. He characterized the move as a reckless bartering of American interests.

Air Force One: A Prime Target

The current Air Force One fleet, comprised of two Boeing 747-200s operational since 1990, boasts classified security features, including anti-missile defenses and nuclear blast-resistant communications. Experts emphasize that any aircraft used to transport the President is a “high-value target” for foreign intelligence services.

John Cohen, a former Homeland Security official, highlights the need to ensure the President maintains secure communication with military and government leaders. The Qatari jet would require significant retrofitting to match these security standards.

A “Counterintelligence Nightmare”?

Darrell Blocker, a former CIA field operative, calls the donation a “counterintelligence nightmare.” He emphasizes the difficulty of ensuring the plane is free of surveillance devices, referencing the extensive bugging of the US embassy in Moscow during its construction.

Retrofitting and Security Challenges

The process of retrofitting and thoroughly inspecting the plane raises concerns about cost and timeline. Cohen notes the significant effort required to ensure the aircraft’s safety and security, potentially involving tearing it down to the airframe to eliminate any foreign-installed collection capabilities.

White House Response

The White House acknowledges the donation and states that all proper safety and security protocols will be followed. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt assures compliance with the law and transparency throughout the process.

Future of the Jet Uncertain

While Trump stated he doesn’t plan to use the plane after leaving office, sources suggest it would be available for his use as Air Force One until shortly before then, with ownership potentially transferring to the Trump presidential library foundation afterward. This raises questions about the removal of sensitive technology if the foundation takes possession.

Ultimately, the intelligence community and military will assess the risks and determine the level of effort required to mitigate them, allowing the President to make an informed decision about accepting the jet.
