Elon’s DOGE Initiative Taps College Student for AI Housing Regulation Overhaul

The DOGE initiative, spearheaded by Elon Musk, continues its controversial run, this time within the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Reports indicate that Christopher Sweet, an undergraduate student, has been recruited to leverage artificial intelligence in revising federal housing regulations.

According to Wired, Sweet’s role involves employing AI to analyze HUD’s existing regulations against the underlying laws, identifying opportunities for streamlining and deregulation. An internal email, reportedly sent by DOGE staffer Scott Lanmack, introduced Sweet as a “special assistant” and “AI computer programming quant analyst,” highlighting his Portuguese language skills due to his Brazilian heritage.

The email also stated that Sweet has been granted “read access to HUD’s data repository on public housing, known as the Public and Indian Housing Center Information Center, and its enterprise income verification systems.”

Critics argue that this move aligns with DOGE’s pattern of hiring inexperienced tech individuals for complex governmental tasks. Concerns are being raised about the potential implications of entrusting such responsibilities to someone without extensive government or policy experience.

Speaking at a White House press conference, Elon Musk acknowledged that the DOGE initiative has not met its initial goals of cutting $2 trillion in spending and admitted to making errors along the way. “I think we’re probably getting things right 70-80% of the time,” Musk stated, a figure that has drawn criticism given the significant impact of government programs on the lives of millions.

Skeptics suggest that DOGE’s true aim isn’t efficiency but rather the dismantling of governmental agencies, mirroring the objectives of right-wing libertarian initiatives like Project 2025. Data indicates that despite the push for spending cuts, the U.S. saw a $220 billion increase in spending during Trump’s first 100 days compared to 2024.

The unfolding situation at HUD, with a college student at the helm of AI-driven regulatory changes, is sure to fuel further debate about the direction and impact of the DOGE initiative.
