Trump Claims Xi Jinping Contacted Him Amid Trade Dispute, Beijing Denies

Washington D.C. – Despite denials from Beijing, former U.S. President Donald Trump asserted that he had been in contact with Chinese President Xi Jinping concerning their countries’ ongoing trade disagreements.

In an interview with TIME Magazine conducted on April 22nd and released on April 25th, Trump alluded to a phone call from Xi, though he did not provide specific details regarding the timing or content of the conversation.

“He’s called,” Trump stated, adding, “And I don’t think that’s a sign of weakness on his behalf.”

This claim directly contradicts statements made by Chinese Commerce Ministry spokesman He Yadong, who told reporters on Thursday that “there are currently no economic and trade negotiations between China and the U.S.”

The world’s two largest economies have been embroiled in a protracted trade war, characterized by escalating tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Chinese goods, in some cases reaching as high as 145 percent.

Trump indicated that upcoming trade agreements with other U.S. partners could be finalized soon. “I would say, over the next three to four weeks, and we’re finished, by the way,” he declared.

He further suggested that China has a threshold at which they would be content. “There’s a number at which they will feel comfortable,” Trump commented, “But you can’t let them make a trillion dollars on us.”

The tariff dispute, which Trump defends as a response to unfair trade practices and an effort to revitalize American manufacturing, has caused market instability and raised concerns about a potential global recession.
