Is Nintendo gearing up for a massive Switch 2 launch? Reports suggest the gaming giant may already have over a million Switch 2 consoles stockpiled in the US.
According to Bloomberg, Nintendo has been strategically focusing its Switch 2 shipments on the American market. Data indicates substantial shipments from Vietnam, with over 700,000 units arriving in February and an additional 383,000 the month prior.
While it’s not definitively confirmed that these shipments consisted solely of Switch 2 consoles, the customs data hints at Nintendo’s ambition to create a “stockpile of millions” ahead of the rumored June 5 launch. This move could be a buffer against potential tariff-related price hikes.
The pause on most of Trump’s “reciprocal tariffs” for 90 days is also expected to boost Nintendo’s shipping capabilities. This significantly reduces the tariff rate from over 40% to a more manageable 10% for products manufactured in Vietnam and Cambodia.
Previously, tariff concerns led to delays in US preorders for the Switch 2, sparking fears of a price increase above $449.99. However, a substantial stockpile might allow Nintendo to absorb these costs, preventing price increases for consumers.
Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser hinted at these preparations during a CNBC interview, stating, “We’ve had some time to build up inventories on a global basis” to ensure they meet the high anticipated demand for the Switch 2.
Nintendo’s strategic inventory management mirrors similar actions by Apple, which has also been shipping iPhones to mitigate the impact of tariffs. This proactive approach could signify a commitment to delivering the Switch 2 at a competitive price, despite ongoing trade challenges.
Stay tuned for further updates as we approach the potential launch date!
