Tesla has issued a recall for over 40,000 Cybertrucks due to a potential issue with an exterior panel that could detach during driving, potentially increasing the risk of an accident. This marks the eighth recall notice for the highly anticipated pickup truck, amidst ongoing challenges for the company and its CEO, Elon Musk.

The recall affects Cybertrucks manufactured between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The issue involves the “cant rails,” stainless-steel exterior trim panels, which may become detached from the vehicle while in motion.

NHTSA reports that the cant rails on affected Cybertrucks might separate at their connection points, leading to complete detachment. Drivers may notice a sound or visually detect the panel becoming loose. Tesla initiated an investigation into the defect on January 13, following a complaint received on January 7. As of March 14, the automaker has received 151 warranty claims potentially related to the issue. Fortunately, there have been no reports of collisions or injuries connected to this defect.

Tesla plans to notify affected vehicle owners by May 19. The company will replace the cant rail assembly free of charge.

In 2024, Tesla recalled a staggering 5.1 million vehicles in the U.S., making it the leading automaker in recalls, as per NHTSA data. However, most of these recalls were resolved through over-the-air software updates. Tesla accounted for roughly 21% of all vehicles recalled in the U.S. last year, while its market share in car sales was approximately 4.2% in 2023, according to Cox Automotive analysts.

This latest recall comes amidst a backdrop of protests and vandalism targeting Tesla dealerships across the U.S. Recently, dealerships have been targeted with graffiti, shots fired, Molotov cocktails, and vehicle damage. Some protests, linked to the “Tesla Takedown” group, urge owners to sell their Teslas and disinvest from the company. Elon Musk has suggested the presence of “larger forces” funding and coordinating these protests, previously alleging the involvement of billionaires and Democratic-affiliated organizations. Investigations into these incidents are ongoing.

The Cybertruck has faced numerous challenges, including production delays and battery supply restrictions, pushing back initial deliveries to late 2023. Previous recalls have addressed issues such as illegible warning light fonts (January 2024), stuck accelerator pedals (April 2024), malfunctioning windshield wipers, and improperly attached trunk bed trims (June 2024). Other recalls have involved rearview camera issues and defective drive inverters.
