The Vancouver International Auto Show has made a significant decision, removing Tesla from its exhibitor lineup just ahead of the event’s opening on Wednesday. This move follows growing tensions surrounding Elon Musk’s public stances and their potential impact on the show’s environment.
Organizers stated that the removal was due to safety concerns, ensuring attendees could focus on the positive aspects of the auto show. “The Vancouver Auto Show’s primary concern is the safety of attendees, exhibitors, and staff,” explained Eric Nicholl, the show’s executive director. “This decision will ensure all attendees can be solely focused on enjoying the many positive elements of the event.” All mentions of Tesla have also been removed from the show’s website.
This decision comes as Musk faces increasing criticism for his views on Canada, particularly his social media posts where he dismissed Canada as “not a real country.” A petition demanding the revocation of Musk’s Canadian citizenship has garnered significant support, citing his actions as detrimental to Canadian interests.
The controversy extends beyond online discourse. British Columbia recently excluded Tesla vehicles from provincial subsidy eligibility. Protests have also targeted Tesla dealerships, and in the United States, some dealerships have experienced vandalism, including vehicle fires.
Musk responded to the vandalism on social media, labeling it as “domestic terrorism” and attributing the attacks to opposition against his views. He stated in a since-deleted post, “My companies make great products that people love and I’ve never physically hurt anyone. So why the hate and violence against me? Because I am a deadly threat to the woke mind parasite and the humans it controls.”
CTV News has reached out to Tesla for comment and will update this story as needed.
