TORONTO (Reuters) – Toronto has ceased offering financial incentives for Tesla (TSLA) vehicles used as taxis or ride-sharing services due to ongoing trade tensions with the United States, according to Mayor Olivia Chow.
The city’s initiative, aimed at reducing emissions, provides licensing and renewal fee reductions for electric vehicles used for hire until the end of 2029.
However, as of March 1st, Tesla vehicles are no longer eligible for these incentives, Chow announced at a recent press conference.
“Vehicles for hire, such as taxis, will need to explore alternative electric vehicle options,” she stated after the conference. “There are other electric cars available for purchase.”
The exclusion will remain in effect until trade disputes with the U.S. are resolved, she clarified.
Tesla has yet to respond to requests for comment on the matter.
Mayor Chow explained that the decision was a targeted response to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a prominent advisor to U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump’s calls for Canada’s annexation and the imposition of tariffs on Canadian goods have sparked considerable anger among Canadians.
“We are saying that while you are welcome to buy a Tesla, don’t expect taxpayer money to subsidize it,” Chow stated firmly.
Despite the exclusion, Chow minimized the potential financial impact.
“It’s largely symbolic,” she concluded.
